APPLICATION GUIDE

6x4 vs 8x4 Electric Dump Trucks for Mining and Construction

Choose the axle layout from the haul road, legal mass, body, traction and charging plan rather than treating axle count as a simple measure of strength.

Dongfeng electric dump trucks for construction and mining
Dongfeng KTA and TZ electric dump platforms. Final body, axle loads and road approval depend on the ordered configuration and market.

Short answer: select 6x4 when the required load class and site can be served by a three-axle platform with suitable traction and manoeuvrability. Select 8x4 when the project requires a four-axle chassis, different axle-load distribution, a larger body or a catalogue configuration only offered in that layout. Final payload is determined by the completed vehicle and local rules, not axle count alone.

What changes between 6x4 and 8x4?

A 6x4 dump truck has three axle positions, with two driven rear axles. An 8x4 has four axle positions and two driven axles in the common layout represented by this catalogue. The additional axle changes chassis length, axle-load distribution, body integration and the space required to turn. It does not automatically make one truck suitable for every mine or construction site.

Start with the transport task. Record material density, target body volume, required payload, loading equipment, loaded and empty gradients, road width, minimum corner radius, surface condition and whether the truck uses public roads. A narrow urban project with frequent turns can punish an unnecessarily long chassis. A high-mass controlled haul road may require the mass distribution and body support available from an 8x4 platform.

Traction must be considered separately from axle count. Tyres, driven-axle load, road surface, grade and torque control all affect launch performance. Ask for a route review using the steepest loaded grade and worst expected surface, not only the average route.

Dongfeng offers several 8x4 mass and battery classes, while the listed 6x4 TZ5E occupies a specific 65 t reference class. Compare all configurations on the electric dump truck page.

Match the chassis to the site

Urban construction and mixed roads

Check legal axle limits, access gates, bridge restrictions, turning space and registration requirements before discussing body volume. Repeated low-speed turns and short loading zones make overall length important. The KTA1 is listed as an 8x4 31 t platform; whether it fits depends on the completed body and local approval.

Quarry and controlled haul roads

Define rolling resistance, loose surface depth, ramp transitions and drainage. Survey both directions because the loaded climb may differ from the empty return. Chassis, suspension, tyres and body mounting need review as a system. The final body subframe and tipping geometry must suit the material and loading machine.

Mining and high-mass cycles

High reference GVW does not remove the need for thermal and cycle analysis. Record trips per hour, queue time, speed limits, continuous grade and cooling periods. A motor output figure describes capability, while sustained performance depends on the complete vehicle, temperature and route.

Battery and charging follow the haul cycle

Dump-truck energy use is sensitive to mass, grade, road resistance and stop-start work. Calculate loaded and empty legs separately, then include body-operation auxiliaries, cab climate control and a defined operating reserve. Do not convert battery capacity directly into a promised range.

The listed 352, 400 and 600 kWh configurations cover different operating envelopes, but a larger pack is not automatically the best commercial choice. Evaluate it against chassis mass, shift energy, charging opportunity and site electrical capacity. A predictable mine loop may support charging during breaks; a construction truck moving between sites may depend more on depot charging.

Body and safety integration

The chassis is only part of the finished truck. Confirm body length, width, side height, material, tipping cylinder, hinge position, rear overhang, subframe and centre of gravity. The body builder needs axle-load targets and battery-clearance information. Dense material can exceed mass limits even when the body is not full.

Catalogue safety references vary by model and include EBS, ABS and ESC combinations. Verify the exact ordered system, braking compatibility, warning equipment and public-road requirements. Downhill speed and emergency procedures belong in operator training.

Procurement checklist

  • Destination country and public-road or closed-site operation.
  • Drive side, legal GVW and axle-load limits.
  • Material density, target payload and body volume.
  • Loaded and empty distance, maximum grade and surface.
  • Road width, corner radius, gate and loading-bay dimensions.
  • Trips per shift, queue time and seasonal temperature.
  • Charging windows, site voltage, power and connector.
  • Body builder, tipping geometry, subframe and battery clearance.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8x4 always better than 6x4?

No. The right layout depends on mass, axle loads, body, traction, turning space and local rules.

Which listed Dongfeng dump truck is 6x4?

TZ5E is listed as 6x4, with 65 t reference GVW, 400 kWh battery and 315 / 510 kW rated / peak motor figures.

Can catalogue GVW be treated as payload?

No. Payload depends on completed-vehicle curb mass, body, axle loads and market approval.

What route data matters most?

Loaded and empty distance, grade, road resistance, speed, cycle count, queues, temperature and charging availability.

Maintenance access and fleet availability

Compare service access before body installation. Battery enclosures, high-voltage connectors, cooling components, brake parts and suspension points must remain reachable after the subframe and guards are fitted. Record dust, mud and wash-down conditions because inspection routines and connector protection need to match the environment. Fleet planning should include tyre availability, recovery procedures and a spare-vehicle strategy. A higher-capacity truck can still reduce output if its dimensions, tyres or service requirements do not fit the site's maintenance resources.
